General Class Information
Fix-a-Flat Classes
This hour-long class is designed to keep you on your bike and enjoying your ride! We’ll go over the tools needed to fix your flat, how to identify its cause and techniques for making the whole process quick and painless. Besides going home with new skills and confidence, you’ll also leave with a patch kit to keep you on the road. These classes are free of charge with the donation of a canned food item (for our local food shelf). Reserve your spot by emailing us at thehub(at)thehubbikecoop.biz.

BASIC MAINTENANCE $70
Whether you can fix a flat or not…The Hub can upgrade your knowledge on how to maintain your bicycle. Classes are scheduled for three hours from 6-9 on two consecutive Monday nights. Students use their own bikes for hands-on practice. Much of the class is lecture, but prepare to get your hands dirty as you will be learning the basics of a bicycle tune-up. Class topics include: makings of a wheel, hub/cone adjustments, basic wheel truing followed by brake and derailleur adjustments with basic drive train maintenance to boot. Please come to class with a clean bike and clothes you are prepared to get dirty. In comparison, a tune up generally costs $70. You can spend the same amount of money and learn how to do your own tune ups for years to come.
This class is also specifically available for women and/or GLBT groups.

SINGLE SPEED/ FIXED CONVERSION $40
Are thinking of joining the ranks of those whose cycling season isn’t stopped by frozen precipitation? Do you want to convert your bike to a winter ready single speed or fixed gear? If so, then you should come to this 3 hour, 1 session class. Sorry, no multi-geared freewhweel wheels will be converted to single speed wheels in this class. Parts will not be provided, but a 15% discount will be applied to parts purchased. Please give yourself a two week window to plan your component selections as some may need to be special ordered. The friendly and helpful Hub staff can help you put together a part order if needed.
WHEEL BUILDING $70 (wheel parts not included)
A two session (3 hr. each) workshop for hands-on wheel building. Students will end up with one (or two, if desired) personally hand built wheels at the end. Students will provide their own materials but will receive 15% off wheel materials if bought through The Hub. Please come in before the Sunday prior to your class if you intend to order wheel parts. Wheel lacing pattern options for rear wheels include 3x, 2x, and 3x drive/radial non-drive. Front lacing pattern options are 3x, 2x, 1x and radial. Be advised that radial lacing voids most hub manufacturer’s warranties. There will be no spoke cutting in class. Ask Hub service department staff to help with spoke calculations when you are purchasing parts. Any exotic lacing patterns must be approved by the class instructor prior to class.
Bearing Overhaul Class $35
This 3 hour class will explain most types of bearings used in bicycles and how to overhaul them. By the end the class you will be rolling along gleefully on freshly overhauled wheels, bottom bracket and headset bearings. The ideal person for this class is someone that is mildly comfortable with simple adjustments on their bike and looking at moving to the next level of wisdom.
Here’s what people are saying!
“Bike classes at the hub are great for two reasons: the employees LOVE bikes, and they also love to share that information with others in a way that lacks that “know-it-all” condescension and is always helpful. I took the Intro to Bike Maintenance class, and learned more in two sessions than I would have in numerous weeks trolling the Internet.”
“Thank you so much for taking the time to teach us the fundamentals of bike maintenance. I greatly appreciate your vast knowledge and experience, it has helped me learn to love my bike a bit more and appreciate the engineering detail involved in what is perceived as such a simple machine”
